15 Tips for Having a Healthy Airplane Flight

Booking airfare and taking off on a jet plane can be one of the most exciting things in life. The prospect of a new and fresh destination, the thrill of travel, it’s hard not to feel that contagiousness of it all…

But, as you’re flying around the globe, it might help to bear in mind that word: contagious. While flying can be fun, there’s no denying that it can introduce the unsuspecting travel to some truly unhealthy situations. If you’re not careful, you could find that you’re dream vacation is ruined by germs you picked up while flying.

That’s why we’ve put this guide together. Below, we’re going to share 15 tips that will help to ensure you make it to your destination in fine health. Simply put, if you want to stay healthy while you’re flying on an airplane, this is how you do it!

1. No Contact Lenses

Airplanes keep the humidity in the cabins low, which means your contact lenses can quickly dry out. It’s best to wear your glasses instead.

2. Wash Your Hands!

Clean hands are the best way to keep yourself from getting sick. This is especially true when you’re 30,000 feet up inside of an enclosed cabin.

3. Keep Your Hands from Your Face

The best way to transfer germs from the environment and to your body is by touching your face… So, you know, don’t do that!

4. Bring Your Own Pillow

Is it going to be a long, over-night flight? If so, pack your own pillow so you don’t have to worry about catching germs from the pillows the airplane provides.

5. No Sleeping During Takeoff and Landing

The change in pressure caused by takeoff and landing can cause “airplane ear”. The best way to avoid this is by remaining conscious while the plane is ascending and descending.

6. Skip the Pre-Flight Cocktails

You might need a cocktail to calm yourself down if you’re afraid of flying, but remember that those libations are lowering the effectiveness of your immune system.

7. Stay Hydrated

Speaking of which, why not sub out all of those pre-flight and in-flight cocktails for some water? If you do, you’ll feel much better once your plane lands.

8. Don’t Drink the Water

The water that comes out of a faucet on an airplane? That stuff’s not good for you! Make sure you pick up a water bottle before the plane takes off!

9. Limber Up

When that seatbelt light goes off, take the opportunity to get up and stretch your legs. Sitting in one place for too long can really mess up your circulation.

10. Take Care of Business Pre-Flight

Have you noticed how dirty airplane bathrooms can get? They’re germ central! Try to take care of your “business” in the airport before your flight.

11. But If You Must…

Now, you can’t always control when nature calls. If you must use the bathroom aboard your flight, be sure to wipe down the seat before sitting down…

12. Keep the Air Pumping

blank

You know that little fan circulating air up above you? Keep that thing on, because you want air circulating as much as possible.

13. Be Careful What You Touch

blank

Many germs and diseases are passed through contact. Given that, it’s best not to touch too many things while you’re in flight.

14. Sneeze Into Your Elbow

If you’ve got to sneeze, then sneeze into your elbow. Remember what we said about your hands and germs earlier? You get the picture.

15. Airplane Food? Yeah, No…

Look, everyone knows that airplane food is gross. It’s also really unhealthy. Just avoid it, and pack a snack before you board if you must eat while in flight.
